Jereen Laferriere “J”
Jereen, who goes by “J,” graduated with her Bachelor degree in psychology in 2004, after which, she worked as a family advocate for a decade with the Warrenton Head Start. While there, she supported families in their goals towards self-sufficiency and better parenting skills, and supported their children in learning emotional regulation and behavior skills. She then had an opportunity to work as a case manager for a short time at a community action agency, helping people with direct services around housing and utilities, while also giving support to individuals in sustaining and maintaining housing. It was at the beginning of the shut down in 2020 that she decided to go back to school for her masters in counseling. She completed her internship at Willapa Behavioral Health and graduated with her Master’s degree in Counseling in December 2022.
J enjoys working with children and teens because they are still learning about life. She believes strongly that the work they do together can help them shift their thinking to a healthier mindset, which will help them make healthier choices and have healthier, happier lives than if they would have stayed on their previous path.
J feels that the training and life experiences she has had have prepared her to work with people of all ages and backgrounds. J grew up in an unsafe home and spent time being homeless and in foster care. As a child and teen she did not feel like there was anyone she could trust or resources she could rely on. Going to school for psychology was really about her own journey of self help. The idea that she could help others feel seen and be heard, to have a safe place, and someone they could trust was something she discovered along the way and has been a meaningful purpose for her since.
J is trained in using a psychodynamic modality for therapy and enjoys using skills and tools from many other modalities: like mindfulness, DBT, CBT, psychoeducation, choice therapy, geek therapy, play and game therapies, and a splash of existential therapy. She is excited to continue her journey in education to develop her specialty in DBT and game therapy.
